Festival of Set and Costume Design “Stage under Construction” is the first festival in Lublin of its kind and an extraordinary on a national scale event; its programme is chosen not on the basis of curatorial tastes, but on the basis of more objective criteria (the most valuable Polish theatre plays), as the Festival takes the form of a contest. Over 70 plays were entered for the competition. As a result, 6 best plays have been short-listed. Composed of Ewa Braun, Boris Kudlička, Lech Majewski and Janusz Kapusta, the Festival’s Programme Council watches over the substantive part of the Festival. We’ve received substantive support from Maria Curie Skłodowska University’s Institute of Theatre Studies. Acclaimed theatre director and visual artist Leszek Mądzik is the Artistic Director of the Festival. During the 1st iteration of the “Stage under Construction”, spectators will get a chance to see 3 plays selected by the organisers: Fahrenheit 451 (The Coastal Theatre in Gdansk), Kumernis, Or How The Holy Lady Grew a Beard (The Danuta Baduszkowa Music Theatre in Gdynia) and Lament. In memory of Tadeusz Różewicz (Polish Dance Theatre – Poznań Ballet). During the four days of the Festival, we will also showcase stage costumes, set designs, and theatre-themed installations. We will also talk with the creators of plays: Books of Jacob (Zygmunt Hübner Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw), Blind Chance (Łaźnia Nowa Theatre), Point Zero (Provisorium Theatre), Hamlet (The Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theater in Krakow). During the Festival, we will see an exhibition prepared in cooperation with Teatr Wielki-Opera Narodowa, dedicated to the most interesting designs by National Opera. For the needs of the event, Jury (Paweł Dobrzycki, Anna Królica, Ewa Kuryluk, Dorota Roqueplo) was appointed. They will watch and judge 6 plays and choose the best set design and costumes, as well as award one play with the Grand Prix. Brilliant Ukrainian artist Onuka will perform during the Award Gala. There is also an option for the young spectators: students and graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (students of Prof. Dorota Kołodyńska) will lead master courses for children during which each participant may create his own theatre space in the model and a miniature costume.
