Showcased from the perspective of the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, a new and dynamic 21st-century institution of culture creating a space of intercultural dialogue, openness and experimentation, the phenomenon of the art and culture of Japan is the theme of a new exhibition presented at the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures in Lublin.
Collection
Bestowed upon the Manggha Museum in 2007, the collection of Andrzej Wajda and Krystyna Zachwatowicz’s Kyoto-Kraków Foundation constitutes the core of the exhibits housed by the institution. This methodologically assembled collection is made up of a diversity of artworks: contemporary and historical Polish and Japanese art, paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, drawings and watercolours, graphics, posters, art books and handicraft – ceramics, Katagami (paper stencils for dyeing textiles), kimonos, Noh masks. A collection of Andrzej Wajda’s paintings, drawings, gouaches, and watercolours is one of the Museum’s treasure troves.
Specially prepared to be shown at the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures in Lublin, the exhibition presents a fragment of this unique collection, perhaps its most valuable component: historical and contemporary Japanese art typified by centuries of tradition and signature forms.

Selected exhibits from the vast collection of the “Japanese museum in Cracow” – Japanese and Western art, both historical and contemporary, serve as a starting point of the exhibition. A few spatio-thematic sequences present phenomena typical of Japanese culture. Not only the works by the most outstanding creators of ukiyo-e woodblock prints such as Utamaro, Hokusai, Hiroshige, which have decidedly changed twentieth-century Western art, but also Hiroh Kikai’s photography, Kenya Hara’s posters, samurai armour and kimonos – veritable synonyms of Japan, as well as “the way of writing” (calligraphy) and “the way of tea” (chadō). “Experience Japan” is one of the series of exhibitions focusing on the meeting of cultures and aesthetics and treating of the issue of interculturalism and transculturalism.
